Explore the night sky at REI

There’s nothing better than camping on a warm summer night and looking up at the stars. But have you wondered what are you really looking at? A free program, Night Visions, will teach you to explore the sky with just a pair of binoculars. Outdoor enthusiasts are invited to learn more about an under-appreciated treasure of the great outdoors, a clear dark night sky. Attendees will be introduced to astronomy you can see with your unaided eyes.

“Asking and wondering about the nightsky is integral to the outdoor experience,” says Seth Jarvis, Director of Clark Planetarium. Jarvis hopes to give you a reason to marvel at what you can see in the night sky when you’re away from the city lights. He will teach you how to identify whether what you’re seeing is a planet or a star. Or is that fast moving light a satellite or a plane?

All ages are invited to the free event at the Salt Lake City REI at 3285 East 3300 South. The discussion will run from 7-8:15 p.m. on Tuesday, February 28, 2012. For more information call 801-486-2100 or sign up online.

Santa, the Moon and a movie

Santa is making a visit to the Moon at Clark Planetarium! Join us Saturday, Dec. 10 for breakfast, a picture with Santa and a special screening of Arthur Christmas at the Megaplex 12 at The Gateway.Visit Santa on the 3rd floor for a photo opportunity with him on the moon. Pictures will be available online or you can snap one yourself. Then join Arthur, Santa’s youngest son, on Christmas night in the North Pole while he tries to complete an urgent mission in Arthur Christmas.

Tickets include a hot buffet breakfast before the movie of pancakes, eggs, sausage, milk and juice. Watch and take part in science demonstrations put on by Clark Planetarium education staff. Breakfast and pictures are from 8:30 a.m. – 10 a.m. The movie will start at 10:15 a.m. Tickets are available online.

Super SciFi Celebration is Oct. 22

Join Clark Planetarium and UEN for a Super SciFi Celebration! This fun family event will include a special screening of the classic Plan 9 From Outer Space on Saturday, October 22 from noon to 3 p.m. at Clark Planetarium at The Gateway.

There will be roaming science cart demonstrations, craft projects and fun goodies. Have your kids dress as their favorite sci-fi character for a costume contest with out-of-this world prizes. All activities are free. Living Planet Aquarium, ATK, Salt Lake County Library and Salt Lake City Library will have tables set up with fun activities and information about programs. Celebrate Utah Museum Day

Celebrate Museum Day at Clark Planetarium on September 24, 2011. In conjunction with the Smithsonian Museum Day, Clark Planetarium, along with nearly 40 Utah museums, will be offering discounted tickets to the Hansen Dome Theatre.

This day is a celebration of the ways museums enrich our lives and our communities. Tickets to the shows that play in the dome theatre from 12:30 p.m. – 6:45 p.m. on September 24, 2011 will be $1. Take advantage of this great deal and see several of our productions with the new Digistar 4 projector.

Free show screening on 8/6 and 8/7

Join Clark Planetarium this weekend for a screening of We are Astronomers. The show will be playing in the Hansen Dome Theatre, both Saturday, August 6 and Sunday, August 7 at 1:30 p.m. Seating will be on a first come, first serve basis. Following the film, attendees will be asked to fill out a short survey.

About the film: Do you know what an astronomer does? Today’s astronomer is not the lone observer of past centuries. We Are Astronomers , narrated by David Tennant, reveals the global collaboration, technology and dedication required to answer the unresolved questions of the Universe.

STS-135 launch to be shown in IMAX July 8

As we prepare for the final launch of the space shuttle program, Clark Planetarium and ATK wanted to provide the community with an opportunity to see this extraordinary launch on our big screen.

This Friday, July 8, we will open our doors beginning at 8:30 a.m. for the broadcast of Atlantis’ final launch and a brief presentation by ATK. Atlantis is scheduled to launch at 9:26 a.m. (MDT). In the event the launch is scrubbed, audience members will be shown a special screening of Hubble 3D.

Please note: This is a complimentary event with seating available on a first-come, first-served basis.
