Hi Andrew,
We are jack-of-all trades downstairs. Our audio processing is done in ProTools. We also have a THX spatializer [it makes the 5.1 mix fill into an even better quality mix]. It's always surprising how much good audio adds to the quality of a show.
If you were asking about the visuals, well that's a whole bevy of programs. The primary ones are Maya, LightWave, 3DStudioMax and After Effects. There are several others used, but not in every production. One of my favorites of the smaller programs is Apophysis. Why do I like it so much you ask... because it's free.
Also all of our light shows have live performed 3D models. The show presenter is capable of bringing up models in real-time that are warped for the dome. This is all done in DirectX 9, so it has some limits. But hopefully soon DirectX 10 or 11 will show up in the Hansen Dome Theater.

From the basement...

Hey, I absolutely love the Clarke Plantarium Dome experience. Everything is great! I have always wondered what kind of program is used for Rock on Demand, Pink Floyd, and U2. I have wanted to experiment with the loops that are used in my music. Also, when are we going to get a Muse show there? They would rock!
